In 1826, James Smithson created a remarkable and unprecedented legacy gift to the United States. Smithson’s bequest through his will led to the establishment of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846 “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Since then, many visionary individuals have helped to advance the Institution's tradition of excellence in exhibitions, public education, collections management, and research through bequests and other legacy gifts. Throughout the Smithsonian’s 150-year history, legacy gifts have played a crucial role in preserving our nation's historical and cultural heritage. The Institution has grown to become the largest museum and research complex in the world today, and legacy gifts will continue to help shape and influence the future of the Smithsonian for the next 150 years.

Established on the occasion of the Smithsonian's 150th Anniversary, the Smithsonian Legacy Society was created to honor and recognize those benefactors who have chosen to support the Smithsonian Institution and its museums, including the National Air and Space Museum.

Enrollment in this honorary society is simply a matter of advising the Museum of the creation of a legacy gift: a bequest in a will or living trust; a charitable gift annuity; a charitable remainder trust; a Smithsonian Pooled Income Fund gift; or designation as beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy.

The Smithsonian would like to acknowledge the generosity and vision of those who have chosen to leave a legacy to the nation through estate or deferred gifts to the Institution, and in this case, for the benefit of the National Air and Space Museum. Legacy donors will receive special recognition in Smithsonian and Museum publications as well as invitations to annual Society activities. The Institution will also honor requests for donor anonymity if desired.
